Creating resources for women's economic empowerment across the globe

The goal of the FSP team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is to expand access to digital financial services so the poorest people around the globe can build security and prosperity for themselves, their families, and their communities. In 2019, the Gates Foundation partnered with GRID Impact and Strategic Impact Advisors to conduct research that examined barriers inhibiting women’s access and usage of financial services, determine which barriers are most resonant to different segments of women in different markets, and make recommendations about the kinds of interventions and programs that might help remove, mitigate, or address these barriers. This effort culminated in a set of resources outlining the research findings and guiding FSP program managers in how to address relevant barriers for their regions.
